This is pretty interesting. Google bowing to the demands of the wireless provider, sound familiar iPhone users? It would appear the “openness” of the Android is a bit of a fallacy. It’s obvious the carriers are in control of the devices, thus the Verizon/Google backed crusade to regulate wireless.
Don’t get me wrong, I’d love to have cheap wireless, with everything being equal, but the reality of it is this, these guys are in business to make money and they’re going to do what they have to to differentiate themselves from the other. Multi-tiered pay plans is one way to do it, not just based on the amount of data you can move per month, bit how fast that data moves and where.
Get used to the idea, it’s the American way!
Ah yes, but you don’t have to go through the Android Market to get an app with the Android platform. The market is like any other store.
Can you get an iPhone app without going through iTunes or jail-breaking you iPhone? Thought not.
Just point out Android isn’t as open as everyone likes to believe.
Average folk won’t know any better. They’re going to get their bloatware phones and not care. Sure you and I care, and can do something about it, average people can’t.
I’m not saying Android phones are bad BTW. They, like the iPhone, are works on progress. Both have their plusses and minuses.
Really my main point was about Google pulling the app at the request of Verizon. Look, if Verizon doesn’t want certain applications running on their network, and they can sniff them out on the network, how long will it be before they start deactivating accounts for using an unapproved application?
That’s a very real possibility.
